Drive Your Bike To Work Day

Archive of May 2008

Drive Your Bike to Work Day is May 21, 2008!

Welcome to the official home of the only day set aside for bike-rack awareness. We're in our second year of this important mission, and it's time for you to get involved!

Perhaps you're here because of last year's campaign. Or perhaps you or someone you know has been hurt by low clearance, and you've come here to learn about what you can do to help.

Well, Bike Month is here again and there will be plenty of bike rack awareness and bike-driving celebration, including a disco-limo bike-drive and stationary bike racing.

Be sure to subscribe to the RSS feed for easy updates.

WHEN IS IT?

Wednesday, May 21st

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

That's easy! Just hoist your bike onto the roof of your car, and drive it to work!

Also, we'll have a Drive Your Bike Home from Work event at 6:30pm:

Meet at the SF Ferry Building for a bike-drive around the city. Bring your bike, your car with bike racks, or both. A disco limo will be driving bikes along the route, as well as performing duties as a SAB (support and booze) vehicle, to those who choose to bike. Make sure to wave at anyone with a bike on their roof, and if you're driving, shout a friendly "Get a car!" to anyone commuting by bike without a vehicle. After all, this is a day of solidarity!

Afterparty at Benders, 19th and South Van Ness.
Stationary bike racing with Bay Area Roller Racing's Murphy Mack!

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A CAR?

Come to the bike-drive-ride anyway, or see last year's information page for ideas!

Stay tuned...

Bicycling Magazine Editor Supports DYBTWD, confuses dates

It's good to see influential people supporting Drive Your Bike to Work Day, but he got the day wrong. He was supposed to *ride* his bike on Bike to Work Day, and *drive* it on the 21st.

I drove to work today, from Bicycling Magazine's Executive Editor, Bill Strickland

Drive Your Bike to Work Day 2008 success!

We here at DYBTWD are still recovering from the big day of bike driving, but some initial media has come through. Stay tuned for more coverage. Thanks to everyone that participated, drove their bike to or from work, brought limos and vintage cars, bicycles, tall bikes, booze, or showed up at Benders for roller racing in solidarity of bike-drivers.

Thanks also to the fine folks of the Butter Lap for hosting the event as part of their weekly ride

A Fabulous Idea

Here at Drive Your Bike To Work Day, we're constantly hearing about yet another horror story about a bike left on the roof of a car while attempting to drive into a parking garage or drive-thru window. I heard recently from a San Francisco cyclist named Sasha about a great way to honor those bicycles befallen to tragedies of low clearance.

From Left in SF:

Clearly, the rising tide of these injuries demands an aggressive awareness campaign. AIDS has red ribbons, war-mongering has yellow ribbons, and breast cancer has pink ribbons. Bike-rack related injuries deserve their own ribbon. I’d like to propose the Celeste Ribbon to commemorate those lost to our streets due to the tragic combination of roof racks and high-roofed vehicles.
